10 Things to See & Do in Bali

Bali is a pretty big island; to give you some ideas on what to put on your Bali itinerary (especially if you’re going for the first time), here are some of my recommendations of activities and sights to see in Bali. By the way, I’m not sponsored by any of the organisations mentioned below – they are genuinely the service-providers I’ve used for my holidays and loved.

PLACES TO VISIT

1. Tegalalang Rice Terrace (Ubud)

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces near Ubud are a renowned sight in Bali. These iconic, stepped rice paddies are carved into the hilly landscape, creating a stunning, verdant vista. Visitors can wander the walking paths, taking in the serene beauty. But there are also opportunities for some fun such as capturing that quintessential Bali swing shot and soaring across the paddies on a zipline. It’s a must-visit destination, offering both tranquility and thrills.

2. Mount Batur View (Kintamani)

Of course, you might choose to wake up in the middle of the night, hike to the summit of Mount Batur, and witness an incredible sunrise from there. For the rest of us, however, the main road of Kintamani is dotted with charming cafes offering delightful coffee, tea, and food, all complemented by breathtaking views of Mount Batur itself. We visited a lovely cafe called Paperhills last time (which I highly recommend), but there are plenty of options to explore.

3. Temples (All over Bali)

Bali’s temples are an essential stop for any traveler to the island. One that I particularly enjoyed exploring was Pura Ulun Danu Batur, a stunning water temple nestled on the shores of Lake Batur. The temple’s architecture is truly remarkable, featuring intricate carvings in stone and wood. As I wandered through the serene grounds, I felt a deep sense of the site’s spiritual significance for the local community. Remember to be respectful and dress appropriately (they offer coverings for rent at a small fee). Additionally, please note that entrance is not permitted for women on their periods.

4. Nusa Penida

If you’re looking for a day trip, Nusa Penida is a refreshing escape you can’t miss. There’s a wealth of activities and sights to explore; highlights include the iconic Kelingking Cliff, where you can trek down to the pristine beach if you have the time. There are frequent fast boat transfers from Bali’s eastern coast, but transportation around the island can get a bit tricky, so I would suggest getting a local tour guide if possible. We went with Day Trip Bali, and they were wonderful.

THINGS TO DO

5. Snorkeling or Diving (with Manta Rays!)

One of the premier experiences in Bali is snorkeling or diving with manta rays—these gentle giants can be found near Nusa Penida. Joining a snorkel tour allows you to swim alongside these magnificent creatures, while diving provides an even more intimate underwater encounter. It’s an awe-inspiring wildlife experience that should be part of every Bali itinerary. Again, we chose Day Trip Bali, who took exceptional care of us, especially when a few of our group experienced seasickness.

6. White Water Rafting & ATV Riding (Ubud)

For an adventurous day in Bali, be sure to try both the white water rafting on the Ayung River and the ATV tours around Ubud. The rapids offer an exciting ride through lush jungle scenery, while the rugged terrain around Ubud makes for a thrilling off-road experience exploring rural areas. Both activities provide a fun, adrenaline-fueled way to see Bali’s natural landscapes beyond the main tourist sites. We enjoyed both activities on the same afternoon with Bali ATV Ride, and they were fantastic.

7. Yoga & Meditation Classes (All over Bali)

Bali is acclaimed as a premier wellness destination, thanks to its abundance of serene, tranquil environments perfect for mindful practices. It’s the ideal place to unwind and deepen your practice, whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just exploring meditation – the peaceful energy makes it easy to switch off and turn inward for a truly transformative experience. I particularly love the space and vibes at Alchemy Yoga and Meditation Center.

8. Beach Clubs (Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu)

Bali’s beach clubs are a highlight for travelers visiting the island. Potato Head is a lively spot with a big pool, great food and drinks, and amazing sunset views. For a more chill vibe, check out La Brisa on Echo Beach – a super scenic spot to just relax, sip cocktails, and also watch the sunset. The beach club scene here really showcases Bali’s beautiful coasts and laidback island lifestyle.

9. Shopping (All over Bali)

The shopping experience in Bali is truly delightful, ranging from the charming boutiques in Ubud lining its main streets to the contemporary Icon Bali Mall. I’ve also heard wonderful things about La Brisa’s Sunday Market. Be sure to allocate some time to explore the shopping areas, discover local brands, and snag some memorable souvenirs.

10. Bali Nightlife (Seminyak)

Bali’s nightlife scene is vibrant, with the Seminyak district at its epicenter. My personal favourite is the iconic La Favela club. This jungle-themed oasis captivates with its lush, eclectic interiors – from the pulsing main dance hall to the intimate, sultry lounges and serene outdoor courtyard. Each space has its own distinct energy and soundtrack, whether it’s driving house beats or global rhythms that move the beautifully-dressed crowd.
